The patient was thirty-something weeks pregnant and experiencing some cramping. I wanted to ensure she wasn't having preterm labor, so I performed an internal exam. I felt something in her vagina - something other than normal body parts, that is. It was hard, like metal.
"I need to take a look," I said to the patient, grabbing my speculum. I peered in and saw something shimmering.
I reached in and carefully extracted the shiny item.
"Look what I just found," I said, as the gold chain I'd just pulled out of my patient's vagina dangled from a pair of forceps. I struggled to maintain my composure.
The patient didn't flinch, but stared straight into my eyes. "Oh... I've been looking for that," she said.
